Integra 7.8 in protection is how much of a concern...?

Hey guys,

I have the opprotunity to pick up an Integra 7.8 for very small pennies on the dollar at a local pawn shop. Thing is...(at least the story I got), the unit was dropped shortly after coming into the shop's possession. There was of course some physical/cosmetic damage as a result. Mainly two of the speaker binding posts have been destroyed.

I was allowed to power up the AVR and it quickly went into protection. I was also allowed to open up the casing, and quickly inspect the internals for signs of damage.....found none, (I have some board level repair experience). The one thing I was unable to do thoroughly was check the internal fusing. It may sound bad but I didn't want to let the cat out of the bag if it were a quick fix.

So to get to the point. Considering that there would obviously be no warranty coverage. Can anyone in the know about Integras, offer some insight into whether or not this is worth the risk...? I'm thinking in the worse case senario, the amp section could be NFG, and I'll have a great pre/pro.

Can anyone offer up some quick diagnostic tests I can do at the pawn shop to see if it's worth the risk..? Error codes to watch out for...?...etc, etc

I'd appreciate any useful advise/suggesions. I know that things that seem to good to be true usually are, but there is no way I could pony up the $$$ to get into such a unit normally.

TIA

My guess is that the binding posts are shorting against each other. That should be quick to check out.

That's exactly what I was hoping for CJ. Unfortunately, my hands on troubleshooting will be extremely limited before I hand over any $$$. From what I did get to see. There doesn't appear to be any current shorting going on. My first thought was that maybe the protection needed to be reset with some multiple hard button push during boot-up.

You'd probably do better posting this in the Custom Installer area. I don't think that there is too much traffic here.

The CI Lounge isn't the friendliest place at the best of times, especially when it comes to dealer exclusive equipment. Figured I'd give it a shot here first to try and avoid the heat.

Besides, the more helpful pros tend to lurk outside that forum from time to time. I'll give it another day or so to see what comes of this thread before I repost.

If it gets too nasty, I'll just tell them it was your idea....lol. ;)

The unit would self reset once short was fixed. In my opinion, walk away from it.

That could be the best advice Rob.

I was hoping that the short may have blown the internal protection, (fuse).
