I am in the market to purchase new laptops for my installers and am wondering what brand has worked well for you. I currently have a hodge podge of IBM, Gateway, and Compaq of which only the IBM has worked consistantly for us. Some of my requirements are: serial port, large display, fast processor, & reliablility.

What brands have worked well for you and what would you recommend?

I really like the IBM T series, T42 or T43. They are quite robust. They are not the largest displays however. I tend to favor portability. The less weight the better. I can't remember if these units support serial...

Dell and Gateway seem quite Bulky for the $'s.

Compaq is ok. You need to be careful about the model you pick. I've heard a gamut of opinions on these. It's been about 9 years since I bought HP/Compaq.

Another brand you might look at is MPC. Good bang for the $. I have a T2200 right now, and it's performing well. It does have a serial port, which is missing on lots of laptops these days. The biometric scanner is great, don't even have to type my passwords any longer.

Toshiba. Bought one because it had a media card slot on the side that matched my digital camera's card. It's been 4 years now and it still runs as if new.
