Usually if there is a RS232 port it is for External control from a 3rd party control system such as Crestron, AMX. It will allow 2 way communications to the control system and give you a true Feedback in most cases allowing you to have visual status of the receiver. Lets say you used a Crestron 2 way touchscreen and everything was connected and programmed correctly, you would get Volume, radio frequency, surround mode, selected input all displayed back on your touch screen.

The 232 allows better control of devices and in most cases more discrete functions of the device..like a preset volume on power up
There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

It's an old standby, from days of old, the object of both enjoyment and jokes. And it is there just in case you don't happen to have any Merlot.

Or isn't that what you meant by "port?" Perhaps you could be a bit more descriptive?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

You want to get a hold of a bottle of Laphroaig, 30 year old. Finest single malt you'll ever taste, and yes I have tried most of the others.... I am Scottish, therefore I drink!

Personally, I'm quite happy to stick with the Merlot . . . and Pinot Noir . . . and Zinfandel . . . and Shiraz . . . and Riesling . . . and Chardonnay . . . and Gewürztraminer . . . to name but a few.

I am more of a beer man for the weak stuff and tequila, Vodka and my Grandpa's home made stuff for the hard stuff, though a good port is not bad every so often

LOL Anthony...Just picked me up a slammin deal on a L6 system only 400 dollars for a 2,000 dollar system. Now if I could only get it to hook up to my new plasma...

Ya see, if he had just asked his question with enough information, we might be talking about his problem!
