Like a few others, I was recently able to purchase an open-box Pioneer VSX-1014tx receiver from BB. The open-box did not include the remote control.
According to a few reviews the remote was one of the weak spots for this receiver. It was not back-lit, buttons were not positioned well, and there was some difficulty with the learning commands for other components.
Because of this, I would rather spend the money on a new universal remote that corrects the above issues, rather than purchase one from the Pioneer parts store (around $70).
Since I do not have the original remote, is there another that I can purchase in that price range, that can definately contain all the intricate commands of the original?
Has anyone else had the same dilemna with this receiver?
A sincere note of gratitude for your help.

I can't speak directly to the model you mentioned, but I will say that it's rare to use a smart remote and have every button ready to fly. There are usually a couple or a handful to learn.

However, if you used the MX-850, a great remote, you could by hook and by crook get codes on this board and elsewhere for anything missing.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

You could also check the pronto pcf and ccf files on this site and see if anyone has already designed a pronto screen for that model.

Generally the original remote has particular functions that are not found on universal remotes until they have been learnt. I would check on ebay or elsewhere for a used original remote. If not you may not be aware of all the remotes functions. Check the manual it probably mentions the function of the remote. Then decide.

I am happy to say that everything worked out well. I purchased the URC-9910 remote and a JP1 cable ($30 & $15). After a few hours of reading, and a file downloaded from hifi-remote.com(created by member Lurker), I was able to get the remote programmed w/out the original. After reviewing the manual, I am pretty sure that all the buttons were represented.
It may not be the easiest method, but it is a superior remote to the AXD7381 that Pioneer lists. The URC-9910 is backlit, simple design (a little big), and even better it also has the ability to be set-up as an RF remote (don't need direct line of sight to utilize). Also the future upgradeability - priceless...
My recommendation is to either buy the remote (AXD7381) or utilize a JP1 capable remote. There are other JP1 models that are much less expensive. Also for a pioneer the consensus seems to be to purchase a 15-2116 from Radio Shack since it supports the AMP 0013 code. However, I found this remote to be a little to large and not enough buttons to assign commands to.
And finally, I did go back to the BB I purchased this from and convinced them to provide me a microphone from another open-box Pioneer receiver (VSXD912). The microphone APM7004 is the same for most of the Pioneers utilizing MCACC.
I really hope this helps, thank you to everyone for your help. I am very happy with my receiver and now have the means to utilize it to its full potential.
