Hi

I have a YAMAHA Receiver model - HTR 5540. It shuts off power by it self as soon as (may be in 2 seconds) I turn the power ON. I am very limited to electronics, so please help me with detail description.
I appricieate your help.

Thanks

Sounds like 2 possibilities
1...speaker wires are shorted together or hooked incorrectly or bad spk
2... amp is dead
try unhooking all spk wires from amp
then turn on amp if it does not cut off then #1 is likely
if still shuts off then #2.. amp prob needs repair

I agree. Also, if it's a short in the wires, plug them in ane at a time until the receiver shuts down, then you will know which wire to look at and repair if necessary.

Be sure that none of the bare speaker wire is outside the terminals or showing behind the unit and speakers. For some reason, I see lots of DIY's configs have about an inch stripped off of the wire for some reason. I don't know where that concept comes from.

Also if you pour a glass of warm milk into the chassis and it sparks real bad and then sports a little mushroom cloud, that might mean you have one more major problem.
Manuals?! We don't need no stinking manuals! a.. er..

Here are two other things to try:

1) Make sure the impedance selector switch at the rear of the unit is set correctly and slid fully into position (and not stuck in the middle)

2) Unplug the unit for 30 seconds to reset the amp's protective circuitry

Important safety tip: NEVER change the impedance selector switch while the amp is turned on!
