Hi. I have recently rented a place and the only really decent location for a television is on a rather large fireplace mantle that has a surface that is approximatley 1.5 feet x 4 feet. I'm sure it can handle nearly 150 lbs. so I'd like your input on a semi-affordable 40-44 inch plasma tv I can sit on top of there. I want to be sure it has discrete codes for as many functions as possible so could you reccomend a make/model? I have no clue since I've spent most of my time researching and deciding on a Hitachi 50VS810 LCD RP only to find I have no space to accomodate it.
Any help would be fantastic. Thanks.

A rear proj viewed above a fireplace would have a poor angle of view and would look too good so unless your viewing distance was far enough away to reducw the viewing angle it would have been a major disapointment. Pioneer PDP 4310 HD monitors are around cheap and would have looked better than the LCD Hitachi anyway. If you could step up to the Pioneer 434CX you get even better results.

Please check out the Vidikron 42" ED or HD plasma. 3-years warrenty, great black levels, all discretes, easy to calibrate with many memory presets. Also has a great mode called IntelliWide used for watching square proramming on wide screen without destroying image quality.
42" ED is quite affordable and is closer to the HD in detail than you would think.
Good Luck!

I forgot to mention that I need speakers and a tuner built in. Any other ideas? Thanks for these suggestions so far :)

LG or samsung. Built in tuner and speakers, great product, and a great price.
Wow, now I sound like a saleman, and not an installer.
