No question ...Demo or B stock Rotel RSX 1055..about $1100..will be best purchase you ever made. Sonically superior to anything remotely near its price (full 5 year warranty applies)

I would suggest the Yamaha RXV1500 @$799 or the RXV2500 @1,000. The new model 757 is a little cheaper @ $650 and is XM radio ready.

I would suggest the Denon AVR2805. At $899 you get component video upconversion, three component inputs, four optical inputs two coaxial inputs, RS232, REar IR input, Pure direct stereo mode, Microphone setup, Multi-zone, and many more features. The yamaha and rotel are also nice.

The Integra DTR5.5 fits your price range, has excellent processings, lots of switching, and good amplification....

Maybe check out the new Pioneer VSX-1015. It is the first receiver to be certified THX Select 2 and is about $650. I've used the 1014 a couple times and thought it did a great job.

That was last week... I'm sitting on it now... Swapped it out for a fresh one...

Marantz- great sound, have become horribly unreliable. HK- decent mid-fi. Onkyo- also god, but why not spend a few more bucks and get the Integra, which is built by Onkyo but has better build quality, sound quality, features and dealer support.

The Integra DTR 5.5 gets my vote.

Good luck!

Harman Kardon makes the best sounding, and best looking receivers. Smooth, warm, receivers, that are as good on home cinema, as they are with music. They are also high on the feature list.
My advice, listen to all the recommended receivers in both music and home theatre mode, and then decide. Thats what I did, and that's why I ended up going Harman.

Goodluck.

Let's forget about everything else for a moment ... Harmon ... the best looking looking receiver??? ... give me a break ... Have you seen a Pioneer Elite??? ... If looks were the only criteria, Elite wins by a landslide ...

That's just plain opinion. I think HK and Elites are both ugly. Some Elites have been ok over the years. But looks is a silly thing to argue about since it is completely subjective.

i agree looks have nothing to do with performance..but..it is a status type of thing if the thing looks the part..now..i just have to go out and hear these good suggestions and get even more confused..it may come down to looks..at 50 years old and having been to many a rock concert i dont know if ill be able to tell the difference from one to another..but i do think ill have fun and maybe drive a few salespersons batty!!!
