I've just purchased a used SONY STR-K740P Home Theatre Receiver, and I'm trying to figure out if it needs to have a powered subwoofer or if it provides power to the sub line. The manual refers to a "active subwoofer" so, that makes me think that its only a "line-out" and not a powered line.......?

The sub out Jack is meant for a powered sub("active")
also you can take the front left and right speaker wire outputs and hit the sub first ,then out of the sub to the main speakers("passive")
Both sound good but your better off using a powered sub to get LFE information from the receiver.
