Hi- I'm very new to the world of Home Theater - I'm working with my starter system now - Philips 36inch TV, Pronto Pro, Denon 3802, Celestion Surrounds + Center, Venturi subwoofer and Sony 5-Disc DVD and Megachanger.
Basically I've just finished labouring through setting up the system and my main question is : I like the way I have the OnScreen display from the receiver when watching DVDs on the SVHS channel,I was wondering if it was possible to have the same OnScreen display when watching regular television.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a denon 3801 and if you have the osd on it's on for all the channels regardless, have got all your video sources hooked up through the amp? if you have the osd will be on the screen if you watch the tv via the vcr and not bypassing the amp watching the tv direct.
I have turned mine off after a few months as it does get annoying eventually.

I have the cable input going straight into the TV, and a single RCA video cable from the Denon to the TV - i thought it could just overlay the OSD on the TV but i guess not. Basically what you're saying is i should connect my coax cable input to vcr and vcr to amp them to tv?
Geez - then how do i change tv channels? the tuner in the vcr?
Thanks a lot!

A friend ADVISED me to use my VCR as a tuner - My ego was protective of my Direct View's feelings so I balked. I finally tried it, and though I can't claim that it's better I can't say I lost anything. He seemed to think that the tuner in my mid-priced, recently manufactured VCR was going to be better than the one in my top of the line (8 years ago) Tube television. (DISCLAIMER: Your results may vary.)

Interesting - did you have to use different controls to change channels on the tv? I'm assuming that you can no longer directly select channels on the television since the VCR is now the tuner.
let me know...

If you want to see the osd of the denon you HAVE to use the tv as a monitor only, I live in the uk so have all free to air channels as well as paid for channels on digital satalite so this does solve my problem.
And as for controlling the whole lot I use a phillips pronto.

With cable tv, digital cable, and satellite alot of people no longer use their tv tuners. IF you replace your 10 key pad, ch.up,and ch.dwn on your tv remote with vcr you won't even notice it.

THat's what i mean - i already have it set up like that - now i'll have to go back through and re-setup these buttons if i'm controlling the channels through the vcr tuner...

Yes, at that time I was using the VCR to control channel changes. My system's all ripped down right now so I'm not sure how I'll be configured when I'm done.
It'd be easy enough for me to re-teach the TV hardbuttons on my "all-hardbutton" remote to do the VCR channel functions, but what if I have an equipment failure and have to revert back to my television's tuner? I'd just have to reset all my hardbuttons back to the TV's OEM codes.
When I switch to VCR as a source (on the remote's display) the channel buttons switch over to the VCR anyway. So I'm already there.
If I'd get off my wallet and buy a Pronto there would be no issue I'm sure.
