I'm shopping for a $200-$300 single disk progressive scan DVD player, of which there are many. Every store I go into for advice recommends a different make/model. One likes the Toshiba 5700, another the Panasonic RP56 while another the Sony 700 etc, and each in turn has something bad to say about the other ones. What do you folks recommend? I also want to be able to control the player with my MX-500.

The Sony 700p is the best. The only bad thing about it is that it is silver.

Depending on your concerns about the chroma bug, the Toshiba's are good, so is the Panny; I personally like the Mits 8020 or even the 6020; while they are part Toshiba, they seem to be better; no one machine can be labeled the "best". IMHO

Check out these new Sony players. The 715 retails for $299, and the 755 retails for $349. Sony finally plays MP3's! [Link: 63.224.30.26][Link: 63.224.30.26]They also have a progressive changer for $350 that comes in silver or black... [Link: 63.224.30.26]

Take a look at the Phillips Q50AT DVD player. It has the DcDI chipset by Faroudja. I compared it to the Sony 700p and the Sony ES DVD player on a Sony 34" HD monitor using Monster M series component cables and felt that it provided a noticably superior picture.

JVC just came out with the VX-S500BK for about $179. So far, I'm real happy with it. [Link: jvc.com]

I've been driving my FPTV with a Panny RP-56 for the past 6 months, it does an excellent job. I don't think spending more will buy you a better picture, just more bells & whistles.
