I'm looking for a bit of help with setting the picture on my sony widescreen TV i havent the Video Essentials or Avia discs but have the THX callibration with starwars. I also do not have the blue gel they recommend.

In the UK what hi-fi mag recommend setting the contrast to 65% , the brightness to 35% and turning the sharpness off not down (tv doesnt have off just goes all the way up or down).

I've personally found that the opposite gives a more pleasing result to me and i guess thats what it really boils down to - what I like. Oh but with the sharpness turned down.

My way produces a slightly grayer image but their way its way too dark.

Any info on what you guys use and why would be most helpfull especially on sony sets as thats what i got.

Thanks
john

p.s Nice one Daniel for a great site.

Joh, the picture looks 'dark' because the recommended settings are calibrated for a dark room, with no or little ambient light. I know it looks too dim, but it really is closer to the ideal (i.e., theatre) levels, and will produce more accurate blacks.
