Kiwi, make sure you ran the 5 (or 6) cables from the DVD to the receiver. DVD-A is a purely-discrete format, and does not get decoded by the receiver. You must run a separate cable for every channel. Also, be sure the receiver is set for the proper input, the 5-(or 6-)channel input. Larry www.fineelectricco.com

Similarly, to get multi-channel SACD, I've run the cables but have to set the receiver to DVD (5.1 input).

You may also need to switch your dvd audio output in the setup menu.

Thanks guys,I have the Yam HTR 5490 receiver& I've connected the 6 discrete cables from the dvd-a player, the dvd input is set on auto & I have multi-channel until I activate the 6 ch input [which i'm assuming is where the awesome dvd-a sound should emanate from ].Upon reading the manual I discovered that the DSP circuitry switches off when the 6 ch input is on. Do you guys think this is related? Thanks

It probably should. Discrete inputs don't require decoding, as it's a completely discrete mode already. Larry www.fineelectricco.com
