Hey!

I was wondering if any of you peeps had a prefernce to what was a really good plasma. I was looking at the marantz 50 inch and thought it looked pretty cool and the specs were quite nice but i am not sure if that is the best. Got any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

Jon,
This year at Cedia, they had a side by side comparison of about 15 plasmas all calibrated by Sencore to be identical. Of course the 60" Runco looked great, but at $35,000 not for everyone. In my opinion, the Fujitsu and the Panasonic looked the best in the $15000 range. I'm installing a 50" Fujitsu in about 3 weeks. Oh, and the worst (by far) was the 42" Sony.
It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever.

What made them look the best? Did you think it looked better then the pioneer Elite, or the Toshiba Diamond series? If so then, wow! lol thanks for the initial info. Anyone up to support this statement?

Thanks

The Pioneer Elite and Toshiba were not included, however, I understand the Runco is a Pioneer Elite with a line doubler and a different chip set. The Toshiba 50 was only displayed at the Toshiba booth. I dont know what they were thinking, but it was mounted about 12' up the wall! I carry Toshiba so I really wanted to see it, but that high up on the wall, it was hard to tell much. You can take a look at the specs at www.toshiba.com Thing I look for in a Plasma are natural but rich color that isnt smeared. Also, on some displays they have jagged edges on some scenes. The better displays Handle this better. Test CDs can also tell you alot. A big thing in Plasmas is their ability to display black. Some show very dark grey. The better ones give you true black.

I've installed Fujitsu, Panasonic, and Phillips plasmas...

Control wise, the Fujitsu has them all beat!
You can set then up so that you can have 5 individually controlled Plasmas all on the same wall

Looks wise, the Fujitsu has the best picture.

On the Panasonics I installed, the S-video overrides all other incoming feeds.. the Fujitsu didn't do this

The best one I have seen is the pioneer pro1000, fantastic picture and is more forgiving with lower quality sources. ie.. vcr, camcorder, etc.. The Panasonic has the best contrast ratio however, also check out the cabinet. They use the bright surround and trim to increase the contrast "feel", to fool your eyes.. just an inside tip. But the pioneer pro by far has an increadable picture, decent price to at $15k.

I've been installing and renting plasma screens for years and the best looking that I've seen is the RCA Scenium 50" and the 50" Luce. the Scenium is just an NEC with a better looking enclosure.

The Pioneer Elite and Toshiba were not included,

I was at Cedia also this year.

The Pioneer Elite Pro-1000 was most certainly on display in the HDTV garden, and not far away from the Fujitsu.

Looking at the two, in my opinion, they had about the same resolution. Although the color was much richer and more life-like on the Pioneer.

As far as control goes, the Pioneer Elite has discrete ON and OFF, and discrete INPUT commands, making it easy to automate with something like the Pronto/Marantz
type remote.

But because picture, like sound, is subjective, I recommend you visit a local dealer displaying these products, and make your own educated descision.

I agree that Fujitsu is leading the mid priced models in overall quality. (and a nice jack pack) And yes the Sony sucks. I had to program a pronto for a previously installed Sony today and I still can't get that mess out of my head. Don't you love that happy meal case they put it in? Oh sorry. Happy meal toys are made much sturdier. Hey guess who makes the screens for trumpet tooting companies like Philips?
