Can anyone tell me what the Yamaha '5 channel stereo' DSP does? I am having trouble understanding the manual. The name '5 Channel Stero' implies (at least to me) that the rear speakers will receive the same information as the fronts, and what about the center? Will it receive mixed (mono) signals?

Old; IMHO, for what it's worth: I tried to figure this out myself not only for the stereo but for the DD/DTS issues as well. I guess in one sense I'm lucky the RX-V1 only offers 2 channel stereo to ponder, sent to 6 speakers & in that you only have the 5 channel (not the new Yam models' 6 & 8 channel stereo). From what I understand "stereo" = 2 channels. What each brand does with it to produce 3, 4, 5, 6, ... channel stereo I think is a proprietary issue. Therefore, to actually know in your case would necessitate an answer from Yam. I am not aware of any "standard" which requires a specific dealing with what info is directed where, which is accepted by ALL, when dealing with MULTI-channel stereo. I think it is a matter of filling the numbers of supported speakers, so they are all providing sound. Bye the way I do notice a sound hole, as my Yam does not provide the use of the rear centre in stereo. Although, it may disappear when I move my rear surrounds to the sides. Dougofthenorth

OK, I got the new (old model bargain) receiver installed. Its a Yamaha HTR-5280. The 'five channel stereo'DSP sends paired stereo infromation to the main speakers, and exactly the same signals to the rear pair. The center signal sounds like a R/L mix. I found this out by trying it, because I still haven't gotten a reply from Yamaha.
So far, very pleased with: 1) Center channel equalizer. 2) Five channel stereo DSP. 3) All 5.1 line level outputs. 4) Video switch.

Yes, this is exactly what it is supposed to do. This was a feature missing from receivers for many years, simply being able to use ALL the speakers for stereo sound. Most newer receivers have this function, usually called 5/7-channel stereo. The center speaker(s) get both left and right signals.
