for home use/setup which is/are needed
1)ANALOG or DIGITAL
2) VU or PPM
Up here in the NORTH no more analogs are availabile.

Doug, the analog type of sound meter is easier to use because a meter needle movement is easier for the eyes and brain to interpret than a constantly varying set of digits.

VU stands for volume units, but I don't recognize the 'PPM'.

the PPM is what the british use...the VU 'volume units' is what we use, it is an average of the signal levels...where PPM 'Peak Program Meter' is the absolute peak of the signals.

VU is a better setting because it averages the peaks and normal signals for more 'real' level representation.
