can anyone recommend one? My tv doesn't have one discrete codes for power, but it does turn on when the vcr powers on. i figure i can use that to my advantage in my macros, but my current vcr gets out of synch since it doesn't support discretes either.

Look at the JVC line. You can find a decent JVC, which supports discrete codes, for under a hundred bucks.

thxs again John. Bought one yesterday at Sears for $80 and had discrete codes for on and off. Now I can use that to my advantage to get my tv to a know state!!!!
My wife thinks I'm crazy that I am buying a vcr only because i can program dedicated buttons for on/off :)
