What kind of equipment do you need to play DTS encoded audio CD's? I have a Panasonic RV30 DVD Player with a digital output hooked up to a Yamaha RXV-520 receiver. Will the DTS CD play through my DVD player or do I need more equipment (heaven forbid...)

Adrian,
If your receiver can decode DTS then you should be okay. Also, make sure that you are passing the appropriate signal to the receiver. I know on my DVD player (2nd generation Pannasonic) I needed to setup the appropriate signal (PCM) to send to my pre so that it would get decoded appropriately....Tony

Any DTS discs you can recommend? I was looking at the Soundscape/FX series, but didn't know if they were worth the money.

Eagles - Hell Freezes Over is quite good.
ttiger72: You set up you player for PCM? Are you only getting 2 channels?
The way I understand it, normally on a DTS CD there is a PCM and a DTS soundtrack. Setting PCM will give you the downmixed stereo version, and using DTS setting will give you the 5.1.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

On the DTS audio CD there is only a DTS track. The DTS information is sent in a standard PCM frame format. A couple of extra control bits are set to indicate that it is DTS encoded information. The CD (or DVD) player thinks it is just passing PCM format while the decoder sees it as DTS. The great thing about all this is that you can use almost any CD player that has a digital output, there is no need for the DTS label on the CD player.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this; I don't own the Hell Freezes DVD, but I have played it. I think there's only one tune that is actually recorded in DTS... ?

There is one track that is available only in DTS. The rest of the tracks are in both DTS and PCM.

only getting 2 channels? Nope...I get DTS or Dobly....PCM is just the straight digital bitstream which is picked up by my pre as DD or DTS...Tony
