My receiver, like most i suppose, has the ability to adjust the db level of each channel i.e. FR, Center, FL, Subwoofer, RR and RL. It can go from -10 to +10 db on each. I understand that an equal amount of sound from each channel is the desired result. I can easily adjust the receiver so all sound equal (with the test tone). My question is: I can make them equal at many postions, for example, I could have all of them set to 0 db and they could all sound equal, or I could have all of the set at +10 db and they could all soound equal. Which is better? Should I try and keep it closer to one end than the other, like around 0 db for example? Also does this adjustment work for all modes, Dolby Digital, Pro Logic etc?

Think, let me answer in reverse order.

The adjustment levels may or may not stay the same for all decoding formats. What does the manual for your receiver or pre-pro say? You can see if you need to re-adjust after switching from one to another. The best bet is to adjust the levels last just before watching a movie.

Yes, setting the mains at 0 dB is the best place to start, and use the main volume control for its intended purpose. It may not be true for digital audio components, but analog equalizers introduce distortions when frequency bands are boosted that are not produced for band cuts.

Besides, if you set all levels at the max, you can't go up from there. Flat is best.
