I have a Pro-logic receiver with 5.1 inputs, and use a DVP 870 MegaChanger (same as 860 but with on-board DD/DTS decoder). There are the 5.1 analog outputs on the changer as well as audio L/R outputs (which I have connected to the CD input on the receiver).

Any pro's/con's/considerations with playing CD's through the 5.1 inputs (vs using the CD inputs)? I assume all the DVD changer's bass management would apply with either output, and all the receiver's bass management would apply for the both inputs.

I have tinkered with it(switch the receiver inputs back and forth between CD and 6-channel input) and for a given volume setting on the receiver it come through louder when I use the 5.1 inputs. It maybe sounds better too, but it is hard to confirm because I have to djust the volume to make the comparison when I switch between CD and 6-channel input on the receiver.

Jimbo, in my opinion, you should use the digital output from the changer, and not the analog L & R, and do the decoding in the receiver. As far as I know, the bass-management only works in Dolby Digital. Even if it doesn't, a digital link is best.

Unfortunately, the receiver is about 4 years old and is ProLogic decoder w/5.1 inputs only - great receiver but I bought it before DD/DTS started to come down in $.doesn't have decoder - that's why I have the 870 DVD player with the decoder.

Do you know if your comment about the bass management would still hold true?

Thanks Larry

Sorry, Jimbo, I assumed. (I know, I know)

I would venture to guess that if your receiver has a bass management feature, then it works in ProLogic.

I also believe that the bass mgt. in the changer is only effective on the 5.1 outs, and you're lucky to have 5.1 ins on your receiver.

It sounds like the options you have are DD/DTS using the changer and 5.1 ins vs. ProLogic using the CD ins. To me, it's no contest: I'll take DD/DTS anytime.

As for the bass mgt., it's probably better to have the last component, the receiver do the manipulation. Bottom line is: experiment!
