Nef: Try banana plugs. Radio Shack has decent
gold ones for a decent price. If your posts
aren't actually banana jacks, just binding posts,
try spade lugs.

Well, it's hooked up now so the point is moot until I move (which is hopefully soon, if my lawyer isn't just getting my hopes up ;)) When I move I think that's the best idea (along with dumping the crapola wires that came with the system, I've seen christmas tree lighting with thicker wiring)

Although that leaves me with a few questions, if only the F,C,R speakers are on banana plugs and the surrounds are on the old "push the wire in the hole system while holding down the tab" (great technical term no? ;P) will there be any difference? and would I have to solder the banana plugs to the wires? (Something I'm loathe to do, simply because I don't have the skill with a soldering iron necessary to avoid burning down my apartment :D)

Nef, there are banana plugs that can be connected without soldering. Some are crimped, some are held on by the insulating handle, some have screw-in posts. Try Radio Shack #278-321 or #274-716. Heavy-duty gold twist-on - #278-306.

If your receiver has the posts on the standard 3/4" spacing, you can get paired plugs that have screw-down posts piggy-backed on the plugs. Try R.S. #278-308 or #274-717.

As for the push-in terminals, used because the rears theoretically don't carry as much current, you can use pin plugs, like R.S. #278-310 or #278-317. Heavy-duty gold twist-on - #278-309 or #278-320.

Thanks Larry, lots of great information :) I might harass you again when it comes time to replace the weak link in my system right now, the TV... not that it has a bad picture or anything, but with only composite in and a progressive player you can see where I might be looking to upgrade ;)

Avoid Monster banana plugs! I've never been impressed with Monster Cables, but their banana plugs are twist-ons!

Definitely prefer the ones with the little screws, myself.
