Hello all, hope this is the best forum for this.

I'm currently working on making a PC the center of my home entertainment system. The thing is that I want to use my universal remote (MX-500) to control the most important functions (MP3 player, DVD, games, whatever). I know there are a few systems out there designed for specific programs, however I'm doing this on a Linux box which excludes Windows options. So here is my current plan:

Get a *cheap* IR keyboard. Turns out that all the apps I'm looking at incorporating into my box have extensive keybindings. If it is possible to teach my MX-500 from an IR keyboard then I would be able to control just about any aribtrary app that has key bindings as long as they don't require key combinations (like ALT+foo, correct?). Does this sound like a reasonable approach to anyone? Is there some other option? Does anyone know of a cheap IR keyboard that can be learned from? Any further suggestions?

Thanks,
David Bellows

Thanks,

However, the computer I'm doing this setup on runs Linux and the software you sent me to is Windows only. In any case I opted for an IR keyboard and taught whatever keys from it I needed to operate my apps with to my MX500 and everything appears to work well.
