Hey Folks,

I just thought I would share this with you as I found
it to be comical. I went to Best Buy today to purchase
a A/V Rack and some cables. I have been using AR Inter
Connects exclusively. As I go to check out the person
who ordered my A/V rack says "You should put that Tos
Link Back" And I replied "Why is that?" He then says
"Well it's not a Monster Cable TosLink and thats what
you want"

(Interject my personal thought, Are these people brain
washed by Monster?)

I replied "I am using all AR speakers and InterConnects
and I happen to like them" To which he replies "Yeah,
but you know Jensen makes those!" At this point I guess
I got a little erked so I replied "No actualy Recoton
owns AR as well as Jensen and about 20 other name brand
companies, And AR happens to be the company that gave
birth to the first acoustic suspension loud speaker.
And besides that, Fiber is Fiber period.."

He walked away...

I am one of these guys that reads reviews on TosLink's
and I hear people say things like "The Monster TosLink
made my highs sound more crisp and my lows more clear"
Uhh ok.... Light is Light and Fiber is Fiber.. Assuming
they use the same type of Fiber which they all do..You
will not see or hear a diffrence.. Thats my opinion and
I am stickin to it!

Sincerely
Brett (Glad I don't work at Best Buy) DiMichele

Brett, one could expand on that to say copper is copper as well........with which I happen to agree! I use a generic 12ga. copper speaker wire, and, while there may be someone who can hear the difference between my wires and Monster 12ga. wires, I believe that to be among the smallest-sound-influencing differences that could be made in my system. I'm sure that interconnects would be of slightly more importance. (I happen to use Monster Interlink 100's, only because they're okay, cheap, and Home Depot (or was it Lowe's?)happened to have them when I needed some.)

I believe that the entire world would agree that the speakers themselves are the number one sound-quality influence, the interface between the speakers and the amps to be number two (and, no, I do not believe that this is where the speaker wire matters, beyond having low-enough resistance to NOT affect the transfer of power), and everything else is number three, except maybe for vinyl discs. (Did I just hear someone say,"What's a vinyl disc?"?)

I have no doubt that my hearing is far from perfect, after 30 or so years of concerts and high-powered systems, and I'll be the first to admit I'm no Golden Ear. However, anybody who pays $1000 or more for a single wire (and yes, there are several on the market) is, in my humble opinion, nucking futs!!!

What is a Vinyl Disk? (Laughing Out Loud)

Amen brother! Hey wanna buy a nice pioneer phono? :)

The biggest thing in Interconnects is the quality of
the termination, the sheilding and the resistance. That
is it! The damn fancy jacket and the Barrel don't mean
much... You can tell that companies like Monster play
to the uninformed audio buyer when they gold plate the
TosLink plug... There is no conductivity here folks!

Does gold conduct light better than plastic? :)

Regarding the cost of cables, the most expensive speaker cable that I know of is/was made by Kimber - at approximately £1000.00... per foot!

Reviewed as being the nearest thing to perfect I assume it's a reasonable conductor, providing you don't mind something akin to an anaconda lying across you're living room floor.

Wait, wait, wait... the warmth of vinyl, the glow of the vacuum tube, the crystal clarity of the diamond-tipped stylus... don't tell me you guys prefer CDs?!?!

Sorry, but there are meter-long interconnects for $23000. Forget who sells that one.

I should also point out that fiber may all be the same, maybe, but toslink connectors are not. Some of them are so weak they never actually stay plugged in. Buying quality will always be a useful concept, IMHO.

Say, I picked up an RCA Toslink cable a few weeks ago for about $30 Cdn, I believe. It came with fiber-cover caps that are actually "chained" to the cable at both ends by plastics connectors, and in the middle of this 6-ft cable is another dual-connector that holds both caps in place for when you coil it up for storage. Unlike all the others I have whose instructions say "don't lose these little black caps that will disappear as soon as you take your eyes off 'em."

Okay, yes.

Fiber optic (actually SP/DIF) eliminates the chance of ground-loop-induced hum, but I hear that coax provides a fuller-bandwidth signal. I use coax. (My AVP-4090 doesn't have an optical input, anyway.)

Next?!

Larry

P.S. "Pop quiz, hot shot": Does anybody else know what SP/DIF stands for? (no fair looking in home-theater definition articles)

Wow Mike,

That RCA brand Tos sounds well constructed. This AR Tos
is not that fancy but it was also cheaper (USD $24.00)

I have to say that I have a set of RCA Home Theater
Patch Cords and I am throughly impressed with how well
they are constructed vs. what I paid for them.

This is the Tos connector on the AR Fiber Cables. Look
I even held the other end up to a red LED when I took
the picture (yeah I know, I am a nerd!)

"S/P-DIF" (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format) typically refers to AES/EBU operated in consumer mode.

BTW, I cheated, but I just had to answer a question about an acronym using another acronym. ;-)

Buzzz!!! Doug cheated! But, we'll give him a chance to make it up. What movie and which actor said,"Pop quiz, hot shot!"? (I know, it's an easy one)
