What do you think of the Onkyo TX-DS787? This will be used in an apartment, so obviously I can't get very loud, but I want to have an enjoyable sound nonetheless. What would be good speakers to pick up for this type of environment. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, but want nice sound nonetheless.

Have you listened to it yet? With what speakers? I demoed the Onkyo and then I demoed the Yamaha RXV800. I personally like the sound and functionality, (except the remote!), of the RXV800. Everyone has their own taste/likes/dislikes. Good luck and happy listening. Also, I have the DefTech Pro Cinema speakers.

Carefully auditioned the 787 last week. It was absolutely killer with a demo DVD that included U571, Chicken Run, and stuff like that. It was also fabulous with music tracks from my own CDs. The Dolby ProLogic 2 adds a dimensionality to both ProLogic basic encoded sources and just regular ol' stereo sources, that is worth having just for that. (By comparison, I have the TX0DS989, which of course I love.) ... Mike

I was looking at the TXDS989 mike, and went with the Marantz AV9000 pre/pro and a Carver 705x five channel amp. Whats the greatest feature of the Onkyo in your opinion?

Hmmm... I guess I'd have to say super-clean strong power from the amps, which provides an unparalleled new listening experience in surround. At the quietest levels, there is nothing in the way, and at the loudest levels, there is no strain or any indication that the thing is working hard at all.

I also like the rather more intelligent DSP modes, over some of the silly ones on a lot of systems. And, of course, the Greatest Remote in the World. ... Mike

I have the unit and am very happy with it. It replaced a Sony that kept getting PROTECTOR message and Sony REFUSED to let me know what to look for to get it resolved. Took it back and got the Onyko and never regretted it.
