Hi all,

Having now lived with my current setup for the past year in a flat, I am now taking the plung and moving into a detached house. No neighbours.

I'm looking to add a sub to my current speaker setup before I add a the power amp to allow 7.1 with my amp.

Does anyone have any suggestions to which sub would best suit, I'm looking to spend a day or so demoing 5 or so at home.

My current setup is as follows,

Amp: Denon AVC-A10SE
Front Speakers: B&W 603 S2
Centre Speaker: B&W LCR6 S2
Rear Speakers: B&W 601 S2

I have every intention, once I get the Denon POA-T10 power amp, to use the 603's as my rear left and right speakers, the 601's will become my centre rears and I will buy either a pair of the B&W CDM 7NT's or the B&W CDM 9NT's (would love a pair of Nautilus but bank manager has said NO;).).

So, taking the above in mind, what sub's would be best to demo?

I look forward to all advice.

Cheers, Guy

I would try a Snell, M&K, BagEnd, Rel, or RBH. These Subs all come powered in diffrent configurations from 1000 watt 8 inchers to dual 450 watt 12 inchers and even an 18 inch and everything in between. Price will take you from about $800.00 - $2000.00 USA dollars. These subs are Fast and Tight, and that is what you want from bass. Although they will play deep and thump, the bass will not sound boomy or loose like some low rider teenager in a truck.

Good luck

I would also add Velodyne HGS Servo to that list, I have the 15" and it is clear and extremely low

Another good choice in this price range is Sunfire. These subs are incredible and small enough to fit anywhere. Unlike Bose, which sacrifices sound to get small enclosures, Sunfire is just better technology: a 2700 watt powered sub in an 11" cube.

Hopefully many of these are available to you to try out.

I agree you should consider the Sunfire. I have had one for a few years now with no regrets. --Dave

I would agree with all of the above. The sunfire True sub being totally awesome! But if your more budget concerned look to the NHT or Monitor Audio stuff. They are extremely tight and great for dual purpose systems!! (movies and music)

DEFINITELY try the Velodyne. I have a total M&K s-150 THX speaker package, sans the sub. I listened to the M and K, and then listened to a few others. I was caught by the Velodyne and the tight bass. I get confused sending links here, but go to www.hometheatermag.com and check out the review of 5-6 under $1000 subs - both the M and K and the Velodyne are highlighted there, as well as a few others

Spiky,

Do you have any information regarding the SunFire sub you mentioned?

links, address that sort of thing.

All

As for the suggestions, you've all basically covered a full week of demoing. Oh, and a follow up week of physio for my back with all the box lugging.

Hopefully, my local dealer should be able to sort me out with at least most of the above, but the sunfire sounds perfect, a small sub with big sub sounds.

Thanks so far, but don't be shy if you have any others you would recommend

Here is some info on the Sunfire signature. It is a hell of a subwoofer. When set up right it is awesome.

I know that a good salesperson is going to recommend you stick with the same brand, so what about the B&W? Or is it just too pricey?

My friend. All of the Subs mentioned are great. What are you considering the sub for? Music Movies...both? If Music go with the NHT Sub two it goes very low down to 21 mhz with very clean and very tight sound (this sub is faster than any I've heard and I've listened to subs all the way up to the 700 lb Wilson XS (naturally that one goes far lower).
This sub is very very powerful with a built in 500 watt Sunfire amp. I was looking at the M&K subs initially, but for a little more I was able to get 2!! NHT sub twos that both work off the same controller you get from NHT. These 2 will beat just about any thing out there. Nothing from Velodyne, M&K, BagEnd, PSB, no tiny little cube subwoofers with big amps (Bass is measured in how much air can be moved, tiny cube ones can only move so much), can move more air.

Well,

To answer the question of why I've not considered the B&W sub's. It simple really, I am considering them, but I wanted to make sure I was not blinded by brand loyalty and maybe miss out on the perfect sounding sub.

As to what I will be using the sub for. A good mix of all things.

I listen to most types of music but keep clear of the thud-thud heavy bass noise though I do enjoy "quality" dance music much of which comes from the Ministry Of Sound DAB Radio station but the normal fare on VH1 is my main diet.

As to movies, oh yes, I enjoy a good film. All the normal action stuff (Aliens, Bond etc.) along with a good mix of art house and those not considered to follow the Box-Office formula.

So, I need a sub that is quick, clean, tight, musical without harming movie sound effects.

Impossible, I hope not.

Cheers for all the imput so far,

Guy

Guy I would highly recommend the MK subs.I`ve lived with the MK 125MKII for a year and a half and and I`m still amazed at how good it sounds on both HT and music. It`s clean and tight and not boomy. It will play very loud and go very low with no distortion. I live in a condo and I`m sure I`ve PO`d the neighbors on many occasions. Give them a listen I`m sure you`ll like them. MTCW Chris
