Does it make sense(sp?) to buy a non THX certified receiver if I have THX speakers/sub? Can I "make-up" for it later by adding a THX AMP between the non-THX receiver and the THX speakers? Or should I hold off and buy a THX receiver?

THX is just a rating system for speakers and amps. Not much more useful than ISO 9000 for businesses. For a receiver it is the same plus a couple small points of decoding surround sound. So, I guess if you're into THX the receiver or preamp is the most (only) important piece to have THX certified.

Interesting analogy, Spiky. I can see your point: ISO ratings often seem pointless, especially if you've been involved in establishing the standard within a company and have experienced first-hand how goofy the implementation can be.

BUT... without ISO qualifications, many companies would not get contracts, even though they are perfectly capable of doing the work, because it has just become a standard part of the matrix when looking at RFPs... ... Mike

The only thing you'll have to watch is crossovers. I believe THX subs are designed to work with a 80Hz crossover... make sure your receiver can do the same.

Mike, that's why I used it. In some circles both these ratings will get you everywhere, in others they are ignored. But in reality it does just come down to appropriate numbers/facts on paper.
