What instances would someone use the audio optical digital output on the Reciever? Dumb question, I know, but I am not sure what I would need that for.

To send a digital signal to a digital recorder. CD-R, DAT, etc.

Is the digital output a fixed or variable output

I think all the outs are fixed, line-level. Except the speaker and preouts, of course.

Actually, you would really only need this output if you have several digital sources and want to be able to switch between them. If you had just a CD player and a separate CD recorder, you could simply run a line directly, bypassing the receiver altogether.
