i'm going to be getting some Mission 77ds rear speakers soon, and have been wondering where they would be best placed. I think they're a bipolar design.

my problem is that my room is L-shaped (its basically a large rectangle with a smaller one taken out). the TV and fronts are in one corner and the sofa opposite. my question is if this type of speaker would be best placed behind the sofa (and relatively close together), or on the side walls (and therefore very wide).

here's a diagram since after re-reading that piece i'm not sure *I* understand what i mean! Would the speakers be best placed at X or Y?

---------------------------------
[ L TV R ]
[ ]
[ ]
[ ]
[ ]
[ ]
[ ]
[ ]
[ ]
[Y Sofa Y]
[ _X___________X___]
[ [ ]
[ [ ]
[ [ ]
----------------------------------

I know it will depend on the room itself and loads of other things, but i'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this type iof speaker, and what would be *theoretically* better.

thanks in advance

okay, that didn't exactly work very well. let's try again:

---------------------------------
[_________________ L ____TV__ R ]
[ ______________________________]
[ ______________________________]
[ ______________________________]
[ ______________________________]
[ ______________________________]
[ ______________________________]
[ ______________________________]
[ ______________________________]
[Y _________________Sofa ______Y]
[ ______________X___________X___]
[ ____________[ ----------------]
[ ____________]
[ ____________]

hope that's better

In my opinion, and assuming I understand your question and diagram, I'd do this:

Center the video and front speakers on the wall they back up to, with the speakers approximately at the 1/3 and 2/3 points,i.e. same distance apart and from side walls, and yoed in so they point to the center of the sofa, but experiment with this.

Put the rear speakers on the side wall facing each other, the one near a corner at least 2 feet from the rear wall, and the other one straight accross.

Move the sofa away from the rear wall so the back of the sofa is in line with the rear speakers, and try to center it between them.

Notice that the idea is to try to ignore the small section of the room, and attempt to use the main rectangle.

You also might consider moving everything 90 deg. counter-clockwise, putting the front equipment on the left wall, and the sofa on the right wall, again placing the rears to the sides, facing each other.

Let me know if I can help futher.

Larry
