Recently purchased the Dish PVR under the JVC brand name. According to the manual, the unit is capable of both RF and IR control. I tried teaching a Radio Shack remote that was made 1997 some of the commands, but it failed. One local store told me that the IR signals was outside of the range of universal remotes. Does anyone know of any (under $300) universal remote that can handle this sat. box?

Thanks

Wow, that salesman must really know his remotes. "Outside of the range of universal remotes" is a pretty sweeping statement. This would suggest he knows the low- and high-end of the range for all universals. Well, he'd be wrong in thinking that.

First of all, I don't have the Device you are referring to, but I doubt if JVC would come up with a set of IR commands that fall above 140 kHz, just for this unit. If they did, I would check out the Sony VL-900, which reads up to 500 kHz. It's only $70 or so.

But hang in there for a few minutes: I think you've been bamboozled... one of our regulars will be along here soon and wil give you the real answer... . ... Mike

At first I was mystified since I did not know that there was a cobranded JVC PVR. However I have been told by several parties that the Dishpayer 7100/7200 were indeed cobranded. I have no idea about the newer 501.

The Dishplayers used a differenmt set of remote codes from the other DISH/Echostar/Expressvu receivers. I do not know of any preprogrammed remotes that handle them.

I use a SONY VL 700 and it works fine.

Is your unit balck as dishplayers were or more silver as 501s are?

The unit is black, same color as my Dish 4000 unit. The UHF remote for the 4000 will control the Dishplayer also, except of course for the buttons it is obviously missing.

If it has web browsing capability it is a Dishplayer clone. It sounds though like a 501 clone. The problem here is the UHF remote. Programmable and pre programmed remotes are generally IR.

If this will accept IR I think you will need a high end programmable to be sure it weill accept those signals. The Sonys mentione dabove would suffice.

The unit is both IR and RF. I would like to use the Philips Pronto 2000, but understand it has frequency limitations as compared to the Sony. Does anyone know what frequency dish uses in general or the 501 in specific?
Thanks
