O.K., I'm ready to dump cable and go for a satellite system. I'd like to have a receiver with a digital recorder for my home theater system and a second receiver for my bedroom. I really like to have one that would allow me to record one show while watching another. As far as I know the Dish system does not allow this, right? Does the Sony? I heard a rumor some time ago about Dish releasing a PVR-701 that would allow this, is there any truth to that? The Dish system has no monthly charge for PVR. Is it worth the charge for Tivo? Can you still pay a one-time fee? This is a big decision in the works, I know I’ve got a lot of homework to do, but I would really appreciate your input.

Phil, the Philips DSR6000R has been getting great raves, especially at the Circuit City $99 price. It is a TiVo which has dual-tuner inputs, which means it needs two feeds, so that and a regular tuner would need three. Use a 2(or 3)-in, 4-out multiswitch, along with a dual-LNB dish (1 penny with the DSR).

I have 3 DSRs and a $30 tuner in my setup. With the DSR, you can record one show while watching another, and even record two while watching a previous recording. There are many more features. By the way, this is DirecTV service. There is an extra charge for the TiVo, and I believe there is a one-time fee option. The first week is free, though.

Thanks for the input, I went to Circuit City this afternoon and checked out the Phillips DSR6000R. Nice piece, however The WB and UPN are not available in my area. That blows it for me. (My wife’s favorite channels.) What I was looking for was news about the Dish PVR 721. It’s supposed to be released in the third quarter of this year. (Hopefully.) This unit seems to have what I want, dual tuner capability, PIP, and the ability to record one channel while recording another. I guess I’ll just have to wait.

www.dishdepot.com is taking pre-orders for the 721. I pre-ordered my HD6000 from them and was not billed until it shipped three months later.

Wait's over! Wife bought me a DSR6000R for my B-day. Which works out well because I liked the tivo option to begin with and the dual tuner set-up is cool. Since I have AT&T broadband it's only a dollar more for me to keep my basic cable with my internet service than for me to drop my cable TV all together. The extra degrees of elavation of DTV is good for me too as I have some trees around me.
Guess I'll be on the roof in morning.:)
