This is the current setup: Sansung HDTV, Panasonic hdtv decoder.
What I need to know is, do I need a seperate sat box with built in decoder or can I use a regular sat box with my current panasonic decoder to receive hdtv broadcasts through a direct tv system.

Dan- If you have the TU-HDS20 HDTV Digital Receiver, You dont need a sat receiver at all. It has a DirectTV receiver in it. You do however, need an HDTV (20" oval) dish (msrp $199.99). I might be able to ship you one just e-mail me. Mark A

The decoder is model TU-DST51 and it does not have a built in direct tv receiver so I am not sure what equipment I need to make this all work. I am new to this hdtv stuff.

I cant find any info on your decoder. Your choices at this time for HDTV are off-air antenna or Satellite. To get HDTV with your current config, you can ony receive off air. If you want Satellite you'll need a new sat receiver and dish that are HDTV. Mark A

Hi, That ota only receiver has been discontinued. Yes, it does not have satl capability but it is still a good system in that it can be used to record HD programming if coupled with the Panny PV-HD1000 HDTV D-VHS recorder. Thanks, Errol Keohi HDTV [Link: keohi.com]Your Friendly HDTV Tips Site
