Not that I'm unfamiliar with the company, they've been around for decades making assorted products. But cable boxes?

Recently, Comcast in my region has been dishing out to customers nothing but Motorola-label cable boxes, and there is no other associated brand name anywhere on the boxes or documentation. They are "Assembled in Mexico." I have yet to see any remote code list containing Motorola for ANY component, and no codes work them (by checking with the "auto-code-search" on several remotes), other than a few codes that tripped the power on/off switch, but little else.

I'm all set on the actual box operation, since I use a "learner" URC, but am still curious as to who manufactures these boxes and why no one lists codes for them. Found nothing helpful in some web searches...anyone know anything about this, and why they aren't listed anywhere?

(PS: Also making me extra-curious about the manufacturer, the descrambler unit on my first new Motorola box burned out after only 3 weeks, and back it went. Though the replacement box has been fine, I question the quality control on these boxes after that experience...)

Well, Motorola made my cable modem... kind of a similar product. ;-)

For documentation, take a look at this thread....

For a set-up code for OFA/Radio Shack remotes, try 0476

I believe that Motorola purchased General Instruments, so you may want to try the GI cable box codes.

Hey, guys. Agreed, there is some relationship going on between GI and Motorola. I did try the GI codes, but got no more than a couple power offs and an occasional channel control, same as with some other cable brands I tested. But no digital features. This is testing on several URCs, the latest being a Sony 2100.

I think the problem with the codes for Motorola boxes is clear enough: they do not even have remotes themselves, they come with locally configured OneForAlls that are barely functional.

Perhaps over time the Motorola gear will become absorbed into the industry standards, it may just be that they're new...if they ever get a standard remote, it should happen quickly.

AT&T uses a Motorola box and after chasing down some info on the web it turns out it is manufactured by Jerrold.

I just got a Motorola digital box, and it seems to be ok, but the OneForAll remote that comes with it is a piece of junk. And the IR receiver on the box is garbage too. The remote can control my Denon 3300 from a wider angle than the box. You could take a string (in theory....;-) from the remote to the cable box, line up the remote with it, everything perpendicular, and it will mist 2 out of 10 button presses. Pathetic. and I did try another remote from my cable company - to be sure.

Thank goodness for Pronto's and MX-1000's, etc. that BURN out the IR!!!!!

... Greg :-/ (I think today is my RANT day! lol)

P.S. I just checked the book on my Motorola DCT 2000 and the book is copy right "General Instrument Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola, Inc". FYI.

And we are full circle...we already know there's an old relationship between GI & Jerrold, and now between GI/Motorola & Jerrold/Motorola. Not sure if this is collusion, confusion or what.

Agree with Greg, the Oneforall that came with the Motorola box was a piece of junk. After learning it to my 2100, the OneForAll's on a closet shelf, since they don't charge extra for keeping remotes any more, no point in returning it.

I'm on both my second remote (couldn't even learn properly from the first one it was so badly configured), and second Motorola box in two months now. First new box burned out in a few weeks as noted above.

Also agree on the Motorola box IR receiver, it's crappy, both as to signal line-up and reaction speed (this latter may not be the fault of the box, however, not sure about that). But it's like using a 14.4 modem on a contemorary web connection, very sluggish.

Don't invest big in Motorola stock right now :-)

Does anyone have the discrete code for the on and off control of the cable box?

Thanks

Some of the Motorola LABELED Digital Cable Boxes have very poor IR receivers on them. These boxes are used over and over when customers come and go...and are sometimes junk. I had a Motorola box that would barely pick up my IR from my Pronto. I called the cable company and talked to a tech guy telling him I wanted a brand NEW box. Sure enough they brought it over (covered with the factory protective plastic and all) and it works AWESOME. The best thing is we don't own these boxes so the replacement is free! When/if this box starts to fizzle I will just call up the cable company and get another new one. The IR receiver on this box is very sensitive if you want model number or whatever let me know.

I have seen on this thread people talking about leaving the box on all the time...because there is no discrete codes for these boxes. Does anyone think that might cause the burnout in these boxes?

You may wish to try the Starchoice SAT codes since these set top boxes are made by GI/Motorolla

I currently have a Motorola (branded) DCT-2244 Digital Cable box. It was installed about a month ago.

I'm having problems with the box freezing up several times/day. I'm using a Pronto remote to control it. When it freezes up, it won't respond to commands - either from the Pronto or the supplied remote. The controls on the front of the box won't work either. The only solution is to remove power momentarily, after which all content (TV programs, music etc.) are lost for ~1 hour.

I'm wondering if I'm using enough time delay between commands - my channel-change macros have 0.1 second delay between IR commands. Is that adequate?

I called AT&T Broadband and they told me to use the remote supplied with the box. Bzzt - wrong answer. Satellite, anyone?

I got digital cable in April and it came with a Motorola DSR470 cable box with a Motorola-labled remote. The first box died the first week and I had to get it replaced. This second box freezes occasionally just like JeffE said. I, too, found I must manually unplug the dang thing to get it to respond to any command.

Using the remote provided, I don't get a response always to the first button push and must repeate the selection. Basically it's hit and miss.

I've got another learning remote that won't learn the Motorola's codes. I want to buy a Pronto but am afraid it won't be able to learn the codes and will still be stuck with multiple remotes.

My Motorola DCT-2000 box drives me nuts. Even with the fantastic output of the MX-1000 and the MX-500 remotes, I get intermittent response from the box. It seems unless you are "in sync" with the box, you don't get what you want.

In other words, if it is updating the screen, it won't receive another command. And it is always changing the time and the channel. Flashing them in the same space on the screen. (There is plenty of real estate to have both!) And it seems that if it is doing anything like that with the screen, it doesn't accept remote IR signals properly.

Maybe I should get another box. I wonder if anything has changed?
