Advice for timed recording with Dish 3900 receiver

Being a neophyte to Dish and Satellite in general I have encoutered a problem with my new Dish 3900 receiver not supporting any timer function to feed various channels to my VCR(s) in order to record the weekday programs I like to watch on the weekends when I can make it home. I know that various companies sell VCR's to control my receiver by sending signals to it, but, I'd rather not invest any more $ than absolutly necessary to conquer this deliberate omission on Dish's part ("Buy our..."). Seems like a remote control with some sort of timer built in would do the trick - the main reason I'm posting this here. Bottom line: what's the cheapest / best / most reasonable mix of features in a control that would provide for my needs?
Thanks!
Summary - looking for a Dish 3900 controller (cheap to reasonable) for timed VCR recording.
