I am considering adding an antenna to my roof (not attic) to be able to receive both HDTV broadcasts (which I believe come in on the UHF frequencies) and also to receive standard low-def VHF channels. I would like to be able to receive low-def VHF for two reasons: to have a backup to my DirecTV system in the event of a storm and also to receive my local PBS station. Does anyone have experience with this? Am I likely to be able to do this on a single antenna or am I more likely to need two separate antennas (one for VHF and one for UHF)? I am located in Dallas, if that helps.

Hi LHL12,

It really depends where you live. If you live in an area where the stations broadcast in both UHF and VHF, then you'd need an antenna that does both. If only UHF, which is the case for most cities, then you need only a UHF antenna. If you want to pick up the analog VHF also, then yes get the VHF/UHF antenna.

BTW, if your satellite local feed is out, you can always switch to your antenna. Besides, for viewing local HD broadcasts, you'd want to use your antenna.

Here's a link to find out if and when your stations transmit in VHF or UHF or both; where to point the antenna; recommended antenna; hd programs, etc.
