I have an ExpressVu 2700 DSS, which lacks a timer ability. This, of course, makes it impossible to record more than one channel while away.

Does any (cheap) universal remote support a function like this?

Some VCRs do. My JVC 3500 VCR came with an IR wand that you stick in front of your DSS box's IR receiver window. You program the VCR with the DSS box manufacturer name, then it can control the DSS when you've set it to record, including changing channels.

I've also modified a cheap ONEFORALL cinema7 remote to allow activation of two macro sequences by X10 commands. The X10 commands can be timed events. Each macro can include up to 15 steps, which should be enough to configure your equipment to record a show.

And... My pronto has timer functionality along with macro ability. I'm sure it could easily do what you're asking. It's not a "cheap" remote though.

I'd suggest looking for a good VCR with the ability to control your DSS box.

I am a new DISH Network subscriber. My VCRs both could handle switching the channel on my Cable boxes but can NOT switch the channel on my Satellite receivers. My Sat receivers are RF and my VCRs can only handle IR. I have Echostar 3900 receivers. I would also like to find a remote that can change the channel on my Sat receivers and a preprogrammed time. Universal remote should be able to handle IR and RF devices.

Stewart,

Not sure about the 3900, but most of the other DISH Network receivers control most VCRs. You can select a program from the DISH guide. This in turn sets a timer and a timer icon will appear on the screen. On that day and at that time, the DISH receiver will turn on, tune to the channel AND can power on the VCR and start recording. The only thing it can't do is load the tape!

Since the 3900 is not their entry level unit, I would suspect it has the same capabilities. I know that the older 3700 did as do the 4700, 4900 and 6000. Even some of the 1000 and 2000 boxes do too!

Stewart, just some info:

Current Dish receivers accept both IR and RF signals at the same time.(if they are capable of both) Your VCR is probably too old to control them, but IR is not the problem.

Also, the 3900 comes with an IR-only remote. I don't think the receiver can accept RF. If you've got RF, you must have the 4900.
