1) Is the optical digital audio output inactive
when you change to an analog channel or is it
active for all channels?
I'm positive it's always active (although I'm going from memory here since last year the cable company switched to all digital channels when you use their box).
2) I have an old Sony tv with one component video
input. The tv will accept 1080', 480p/i, but not
720p. My Yamaha RX-V1300 receiver has 2 component
inputs and one output with bandwidth rated at
60MHz @ -3db. Is that enough bandwidth for hd?
I have heard that 1080i requires close to 100MHz
bandwidth. What happens to a 1080i signal when
it's sent through a receiver with not enough bandwidth?
According to Yamaha that model meets HDTV requirements. But remember that component video is analog, so unlike digital where it's all or nothing, analog just starts degrading. I've heard reports that running high-bandwidth HDTV through old component switching receivers basically results in a blurry and/or darker image, depending on exactly what it's going through.
3) My Sony tv is 4:3. I'm told that when a hd
channel transmits a sd program, a 4:3 tv will
have letterboxed bars on all 4 sides. Would I
need to connect s-video to anoth tv input and
switch to that input whenever the 4-sided box
display occurs? Is that the only workaround for
this?
True, however the 8300HD has several zoom modes that should work for this (I believe it's the "#" key on the remote). And connecting S-Video won't make any difference, since if you're watching a HD channel it'll still be outputting a "windowboxed" image over S-Video unless you use a zoom mode. Otherwise, just watch SD stuff on SD channels! :-)
4) I am going to have a 8300 and 4200 in close
proximity. Are these boxes addressable so I can
avois remote control problems?
No, pretty sure this is NOT possible.
