...That would be anything based on LG's 5th generation ATSC chip.

Daniel,

Is this in reference to my "mask out the multipaths" question?

Daniel ,

Thanks, I have been wondering what next level ATSC receiver to get. The one built into my Pioneer Plasma is not as good as I had first thought it to be. So now I am back to looking at STB versions.

At Circuit City I saw a Pro Brand HD 3150plus Digital Stream for $229.00
Digitalstreamusa.com

I have not yet had a chance to see if there are any reviews on it.

I will also look for and LG's with a LG's 5th generation ATSC chipset.

I don't think there are any LG standalones with the 5th generation chip. Only some of their newer TVs integrate the chips, otherwise I think it's currently just third party units (and I don't know which ones).

Daniel,

And that is becoming one of my concerns. As manufactures of TV's switch over to ATSC tuners we are going to see less choices of STB's.

By the time the Gov gets around to switching to ATSC in 2007, most people will have already purchased a big screen tv with built in ATSC tuner and the only thing they may need a STB for is that spare tv.

I am hoping that some manufactures will continue to offer high end STB ATSC tuners and we just don't only see generic marginal quality ATSC STB tuners available.

Of course this is a moot point to people close to ATSC tuners but might be a problem for people in fringe areas that require a tuner with a sensitive front end.

And I also realise that the number of people watching tv OTA is slim to none compared to those on Cable or Satellite.

One other babble - is ATSC MPEG4 ? I can't remember. I see MPEG4 as the future with Satellite.

No, OTA HDTV is MPEG2.

Well guys, not to bring this thread back to it's original topic, But...... I finally was able to schedule the install today and it was an overall success. I was able to use the ChannelMaster Stealthtenna mounted inside the garage.
The customer was pleased that I didn't have to mount outside and that he'll be able to catch the Superbowl in HD, and I was pleased I didn't have to climb on his roof and drive a ground rod in January!
Interesting side note, though. All other stations came in strong as well (including Springfield, Ma. PBS station ) EXCEPT for Hartford's UPN station- WHICH IS ON THE SAME TOWER AS ABC! I WAS able to get UPN to come in by moving the antenna about a half inch down on the mast- then lost ABC.
Bottom line was he didn't care about UPN HD anyway (who does now that Enterprise is gone?) but.....weird, eh?

AVman66,

Sorry that I contributed greatly to dragging this post off topic. I agree about UPN- what were they thinking?

I wonder how you would even ground an SS outside? It is pretty well encapsulated in Plastic. I guess you could ground the post that it is mounted on or put a ground on the coax.

It is fun driving ground rods !!!

Daniel,

Thanks for the MPEG answer.
