Does anyone know the how to hook up direct tv to a dolby digital receiver in order to get digital sound output through speakers? Obviously I'm very new to all this home theater stuff :)

First, the Satellite receiver must be capable of receiving Dolby Digital. It must have an optical digital connector to be able to extract the Dolby Digital signal.
What make and model satellite receiver are you using?

Oh, it does not have that. That makes sense, same as dvd. Are all the direct tv channels dolby?

No, only some HBO, Starz, and Showtime are, other than some of the pay-per-views.
