The relevant parts of the system:
Panasonic 55"(?) HD ready TV, 4:3 aspect
General Instruments HD decoder
Motorola/GI cable box

When on 'Video 1' for regular CATV viewing, the 4:3 screen is filled... When switched to 'component 1' for HDTV viewing, the screen is smushed in to the sides, the upper and lower parts of the screen aren't visible (looks kinda like the 'zoom' aspect on a Panasonic 16:9 tv)- it's like the converter is sending out a 16:9 signal that the 4:3 tv can't quite comprehend...

When viewing regular cable signal through the HD decoder via 'component 1', there's letterboxes on the sides, like you would expect to find on a 16:9 tv displaying a 4:3 signal in 'normal' mode...

When I've put the same cable box and HD converter on 4 other systems, they've acted like they're supposed to- but then again, the other 4 were 16:9 tv's!

So, should I point my customer towards a 16:9 tv, or is there something I can do to eliminate this?

(there is no 'aspect' switching on this particular tv...)

Al, sounds like you have it. TVs that aren't made to accept wide pictures can't properly display them. May I assume you've explored the decoder's menus for output options? It sounds like leaving the decoder out of the signal path eliminates the aspect problems, so that points to the decoder/TV interface. That's where something has to change.

the decoder is either on or off- it's not even able to be controlled by a remote! (what can you expect for $4.95 a month... heh)

I guess he's stuck...
