Is there anything wrong with leaving a PTV unit (ReplayTV, TiVo, UltimateTV) on all the time? Will the drive or internal components wear out faster?
It seems like a pain as the units take a while to "boot up" after being off for awhile.

Steve, my Philips DirecTiVo stays on. This question is exactly the same as it is with a computer. Some say leave it on, others say turn it off. Assuming you have a computer (you are here, after all), how often do you shut yours down?
In case you didn't realize it, TiVo units ARE computers, complete with motherboard, hard drive, ROM, Unix operating system, etc., so they literally do boot up upon powering on.

Larry, Do you really leave your unit "on" or just in "standby"? Phil

I leave it on, and just turn off the rest of the system. I use my VCR for TV tuning, so I don't have to go to standby, since I don't route the signal through the satellite tuner. Besides, I don't believe the HD powers down in standby, it only switches the output to the RF input.

My TiVo has been running non-stop for two years now. The only time I had problems was that sometimes after a power outage, it would be prone to lock up after a reboot. It's been on a UPS for over a year, and it's performed flawlessly. So, leave it on.
