Toshiba TVs nearly all use NEC1 IR protocol, device 64.  Just about any universal remote will control all of the normal functions.  Toshiba only has one set of codes.

If you're looking for more exotic functions, like entry into the service menu, etc. then you should get a remote made by UEI, because you can add any function to the remote.
Cable remotes like Comcast will work, or you could buy a RCA RCRP05B.

Use setup code TV 0156, or 10156 with remotes that take 5 digit setup codes.

Are you sure that the TV itself is OK?  You may want to check for IR output by looking at the LEDs with a diigital camera, e.g. a cell phone camera.

thanks 3FG yes i think it's the remote because some functions such as volume will eventually work if you just keep trying by using the buttons on the front of the set everything works fine i'm not looking for any exotic functions so i will try and find out about the NEC IR that you mentioned thanks...

So have you changed the batteries?
Don't worry about NEC IR; I just mentioned that to show that Toshiba TVs all use the same code-- excepting very cheap ones.  Nearly any universal remote will work with work with your TV.  The RCR RCRP05B would be more flexible than most, but any universal will do the basic functions.

Buy a RCA RCRP05B.  Use setup code TV 0156.
