Hi,

My equipment list:

TV - JVC AV-35770
VCR - JVC HR-VP646U
DVD Player - JVC XV-501BK
Receiver - Onkyo TX-DS656

I'm looking for the remote control for my system that will operate all components. I had bad luck with A/V Producer 8. It doesn't allow me to control Onkyo's DVD video source. It also had problems with some DVD player functions.

I've read some of this site posts and it seems to me that Pronto and SL-9000 (has there been a new SL-9000 version released recently) are the most popular remotes. If any of you have the same receiver or the same DVD player as I do, would you please reply with your comments regarding those two remote controls. Are there any other good remote controls in the same price range that would work with my equipment? Thanks in advance.

Your equipment list should be totally irrelevant when choosing among the better, learning universal remotes. If the remote can't handle all of your equipment, it's not universal!!

The SL9000 and Pronto are in totally different price ranges, and have totally different levels of capabilities. (See reviews section of this site.)

My recommendations break down on price range:
1. $100 — SL9000, best by far for <= $100
2. $180-200 — Marantz RC2000 Mark II. You need this if you have trouble remembering where commands are placed, you can custom label them on the LCD panel.
3. $300+ — Pronto, if you like touchscreen, and desire total customization of button layouts and the ability to perform complex macros based on the state of your components.

Stephen,

I appreciate you providing me with this information. I personally do not have problems remembering reassigned buttons but female unit might have . I'll probably check the Marantz RC2000 Mark II remote control. Is there Marantz RC2000 review somewhere on this site (I couldn't find it)? Thanks again.

Check out my thread on the Palm Pilot. It is the same price range as the Marantz. The Palm Pilot will be more flexible, and more capable as a remote, but it is touch screen. You have to decide between touch screen and physical buttons. Both are very good choices.

MisterX,
You can find the Marantz RC2000 MKII review at this site: www.smr-home-theatre.org, then click on home theater and the Hardware review section. I own this MKII and 've been 100% pleased with it. Buy it and you won't be regret. I had the SL-9000 for 2 weeks and exchanged it for this MKII.
