I am rather new to this remote thing so be patient with me. How do I get my MX-700 to learn from my original Bose Lifestyle 28?

See this thread for procedures on learning from the Bose remote. Actually, you will learn from the receiver, so be sure and locate the IR emitter on the receiver and hold your 3000 in front of that, not the Bose remote.
