Can anybody help me with the BD-512 it just doesnt explain well enough and it's driving me daft

You just work your way through the device keys. First you do TV1, going through the code storing procedure. Then, if the next piece of kit is a VCR, use VCR1, and so on, selecting the appropriate device key for the equipment in question. When all codes have been stored under the various device keys, these keys are then used to select what you want to control, as required.
I think I have got this right.
(addition 10 mins later) I would think that it is less confusing to have only one item powered up at a time when setting the codes, (unless someone knows otherwise...) :-)
