If I relearn certain keys on the remote (volume up/down for example) from the standard Sony preprogrammed codes, I loose the auto repeat ability of the key.
If you hold down the key on the original remote until the learning remote beeps, this usually clears up this problem.
I cannot learn a key to emit one code on first press and a different code on the subsequent press (Power on/off on my Onkyo receiver needs this ability)
I don’t know of any remote that gives you this capability, unless it is one which has a shift key capability, like the OFA/RS remotes. I am unfamiliar with the Pronto and Harmony so I can’t speak for them. Any remote I have seen only has one power button preprogrammed, and you have to learn the other power button on an unused key, if you have a component remote with On/Standby commands separate.
Another wrinkle is that I have a complete mixture of North American and European AV equipment (because I have moved across the Atlantic a couple times). So the remote I select should have presets for both North American and European equipment.
I wondered about your using a 950T when you are in Canada, but this explains it. In order to get presets for European equipment, I think you would need the 3100T, but since you don’t need the additional keys, like teletext and fastext (I don’t think you have them in Canada but I could be wrong), you could use the 3100 and learn everything. The 3100 will also handle X-10.
Anyone who reads these forums knows that I am partial to the 3100, so I will have to let those who like Harmony or Pronto remotes provide you with feedback for them.
