Hi,

I've just joined RemoteCentral because I'm looking to replace a universal remote that I own today with one that has fewer limitations. I own a Sony RM-VZ950T. It's a well constructed universal with good learning capabilities and other benefits. However, I find it frustrating to use because of the following limitations.

- If I relearn certain keys on the remote (volume up/down for example) from the standard Sony preprogrammed codes, I loose the auto repeat ability of the key.
- I cannot learn a key to emit one code on first press and a different code on the subsequent press (Power on/off on my Onkyo receiver needs this ability)
- There are certain hard keys missing from the remote for which soft keys may compensate
- No ability to do macros. So, turning on/off the system is involved.

So, in short I'm looking at a new remote like the Harmony URC-300, the Philps Pronto or the Sony AV-3100 to give me the soft keys that I believe I need. I'm also planning for future needs like X-10 control of theatre lighting. Another wrinkle is that I have a complete mixture of North American and European AV equipment (because I have moved across the Atlantic a couple times). So the remote I select should have presets for both North American and European equipment.

Will any or all of the above remotes solve the problems and requirements that I've noted above? Thanks for any guidance.

If I relearn certain keys on the remote (volume up/down for example) from the standard Sony preprogrammed codes, I loose the auto repeat ability of the key.

If you hold down the key on the original remote until the learning remote beeps, this usually clears up this problem.

I cannot learn a key to emit one code on first press and a different code on the subsequent press (Power on/off on my Onkyo receiver needs this ability)

I don’t know of any remote that gives you this capability, unless it is one which has a shift key capability, like the OFA/RS remotes. I am unfamiliar with the Pronto and Harmony so I can’t speak for them. Any remote I have seen only has one power button preprogrammed, and you have to learn the other power button on an unused key, if you have a component remote with On/Standby commands separate.

Another wrinkle is that I have a complete mixture of North American and European AV equipment (because I have moved across the Atlantic a couple times). So the remote I select should have presets for both North American and European equipment.

I wondered about your using a 950T when you are in Canada, but this explains it. In order to get presets for European equipment, I think you would need the 3100T, but since you don’t need the additional keys, like teletext and fastext (I don’t think you have them in Canada but I could be wrong), you could use the 3100 and learn everything. The 3100 will also handle X-10.

Anyone who reads these forums knows that I am partial to the 3100, so I will have to let those who like Harmony or Pronto remotes provide you with feedback for them.

there is no Harmony URC-300

HTM has a URC-300 and Harmony has other remotes
except for 2 any of these remotes can do what you want
