I have the following 4 devices that I would need to control with the remote:

Phillips Magnovox TV with remote
Panasonic PV-8450 VCR with remote
Playstation 2 with Saitech DVD Commander 2 remote
Technics SA-AX610 receiver without remote

I would need a learning remote for the Playstation and also with codes for Technics receivers since I don't have that remote.

I would also like to be able set up macros so that I could control mutliple devices in one mode. For instance, my TV has picture-in-picture, but not two tuners. So I would like to use my VCR as a second tuner, and use the PnP channel change buttons to change channels on the VCR without having to change the remote from TV mode to VCR mode. Another example would be controlling the volume of the receiver while still in DVD mode, since the audio on the Playstation 2 is only connected through the receiver.

My upper limit on spending for this remote would be $200-250.

Thank you for your help. Also, any advice would be welcome.

Why do you "need" a learning remote for the playstation?

I would also like to be able set up macros so
that I could control mutliple devices in one mode.
For instance, my TV has picture-in-picture, but
not two tuners. So I would like to use my VCR
as a second tuner, and use the PnP channel change

That's PIP, PnP is short for "Plug and play"

buttons to change channels on the VCR without
having to change the remote from TV mode to VCR
mode. Another example would be controlling the
volume of the receiver while still in DVD mode,
since the audio on the Playstation 2 is only connected
through the receiver.

Nothing a ueic (OFA or Radio Shack) wouldn't handle, especially with JP-1.
My upper limit on spending for this remote would
be $200-250.

Top price on a current ueic is about 70.00. Can I have what's left-over?

Thank you for your help. Also, any advice would
be welcome.

Pronto: Touch screen remote
HTM MX-500: (price around 100$) for push buttons
Harmony SST-768: mostly push buttons

there are reviews of the HTM and harmony remote in the review section. There is also a review for the Pronto TSU-2000 but not for the 3000 that replaced it (more hard buttons, 16 shades of gray...)

not sure who you are asking. but I am not a Sony remote fan, and if you are going to go for a remote that does not have any LCD, then I think a One for all is a better choice then the 700. But in my opinion, if you are going to try and get a decent remote, then you need something with an LCD, for all those funny commands. The MX-500 is a push button remote, but it has 10 buttons that use an LCD label that can have any 5 letter name. The Harmony is also mostly button, but it does have an LCD you can scroll through (even has a TV show guide).

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll go look at your recommendations in the reviews.

As for needing a learning remote for the PS2, I have the first vesion of it, and a DVD remote add-on. I figured that the add-on wouldn't be a standard code, and would have to use a learning remote.
