I have a VCR, (model: Mitsubishi HS-u69) with no remote. Ordinarily this wouldn't be an issue, but there's one feature that I'd like to use that is only available (as far as I can tell) via the remote...

The missing feature is to switch the VCR to line-in mode, so that i can send the tv signal, or something else through it.

Does anyone have any ideas on an inexpensive way to solve this problem? Replacement remotes for this model, if they are even gettable, cost upwards of 90 bucks, enough to warrant replacing the damn deck entirely, which seems a shame to do for one missing feature.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Get yourself a one-for-all or radio shack remote, if the preprogrammed code is missing a function, you can add it via advanced codes, these are three digit codes for individual funtions, like PIP-098,PLAY-234. Here's a list for your vcr;

As edmund says, discrete codes are the way to go, but if you don't want to get that involved, get a learning remote, if you don't have one, and go to a store that has Mitsubishi vcr's and learn the input code from one of their remotes

Awesome. This is great. I'm a newbie to these remotes and discrete codes. I will buy one tomorrow though and get into it - can I ask, how did you find the device number for my model mitsubishi? I fished around that site you linked to and I just saw pages of tables of numbers .. . and man...is it really all that confusing?

I knew the code because I've owned mitsubishi vcr's in the past, I wouldn't own any made in last couple years though. At radio shack, the only remotes to accept advanced codes are the 15-2103, (if you can find 2104), 2116, 2117, 2133.

Sorry for the newbie questions ....

If not all radioshack remotes do advanced codes, what do those others do? Just IR learning?

Are advanced codes the same thing as discrete codes?

I went to the Device Codes listing and it listed 4 codes for Mitsubishi VCRs: 0067, 0043, 0048, 0061 - did you just do trial and error to find which is the right one?

Thanks for your patience.

The rest of the radio shack remotes accept preprogrammed codes only. Whatever's mapped is all you get.

Not exactly, some advanced codes are toggle commands, meaning they toggle between on & off, they toggle through video inputs. Where discrete commands do one function, and one function only, ON but not off. OFF but not on. So some advanced codes are discrete, others are toggles.

When it comes to new equipment yeah, but I've been usng one-for-all remotes since the 80's. As for code 0067, that's the JVC vcr code. the other two don't know.

Use code 0043 for your Mitsubishi vcr. At the bottom of the page, click on the Official UEIC codes link and all the advanced codes will be listed. I currently own two Mitsubishi vcr's, HS-U550 and HS-U650. The discrete code for input is 186. For more info on discrete codes, check out this thread and the thread it refers you to. Today I bought the Radio Shack 15-2103 for 20 bucks, and after some minor trials (sometimes that "magic button" just doesn't light up for some reason) coded a button for my VCR to change the input source. Totally psyched. Thanks guys for your help. I think I'm hooked on these little remotes that I'd previously dismissed.

Now...can I get this thing to control my Tivo too?

Thanks again for your help. Saved me tons of cash too.

Sorry, but the 2103 doesn't have a code for the Sony SA tivo, later remotes like the 2116 do, it's VCR0636. The only tivo code in the 2103 is for philips/hughes brands. And that one doesn't accept advanced codes.

Do all the ofa remotes (like the cheapest one I found (URC-6131, $15 bucks on BlueDo) offer advanced/discrete codes?
