Hi all,

I don't know much about remote controls thus forgive me if I ask stupid questions! :P
I have an old VCR (RCA: VR355) without a remote.
I was able to set up my cable box remote (USELECTRONICS: UG3DIGI) to contol only the basic functions (on/off/play/stop/forward/reverse) of my VCR.
If I want to control all my VCR functions such as setup time, future record, on-screen programming menu, switch channels, eject...etc.
Does anyone know if this is possible using my cable box remote (USELECTRONICS: UG3DIGI)??
If not, does this mean I need to get a better/smarter remote??
Which remote do you recommand??
Also, if anyone out there know/have an old remote for RCA VR355 VCR and does not need it anymore, please let me know... :)

Many thanks!!!

You might be able to get a replacement remote from http://www.replacementremotes.com but generally speaking, they're not cheap.

A much better option would be to buy a "One For All" or "Radio Shack" universal, as most of these support a concept called "advanced codes". Assuming that you find a built in setup code that works most of your VCR's functions, you can use advanced codes to program the missing functions.

Stear clear of the really cheap OFA remotes as most of these don't support advanced codes. The cheapest OFA remote you should look at is the URC-6011 (aka URC-6012) which sells for $15.

The good news is that RCA is such a common brand that all universals should have a code for it.
