My devices are stored in a wood cabinet that my TV sits on top of. What is the cheapest way to have my universal remote work everything?

I have seen the pyramid type IR Extenders, but I hate to spend that much money to simply move the signal down two inches into the cabinet. Are their other methods to solve this problem?

For example is their a non-wireless solution where I can put an IR receiver on top of the cabinet, with a cord that connects to an IR transmitter in the cabinet?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have fun! I'm planning to do this myself, but I don't have the cabinetry yet.
