There is lots of great info here, but I haven't seen the bottomline, so to speak. I have basic home theater system and need to simplify my remote control life. I am looking for one remote, with as few buttons as possible. Which remote do I choose?

My system - HDTV, home theater reciever, satelite reciever with Tivo, DVD, VCR, and computer.

I always listen to sound via the reciever and this seems to complicate the issue.

Desire:
- push 1 button to view DVD (switch to DVD inputs on TV, receiver, turn on DVD)
- play/stop/ff/rwd/menu buttons control DVD
- volume/mute buttons control reciever

- push 1 button to view TV (switch to satellite box inputs on TV, sat input on receiver)
- same play/stop/ff/rwd/menu buttons control Tivo
- ch up/down control Sat box
- volume/mute buttons control reciever
- same scenario for each device
- obviously the computer is a bit different

I count about 10 buttons or so should do the trick

Any suggestions or am I dreaming? Oh yea, inexpensive is good. Thanks!

Have you taken a look at the Harmony?

It will do what you want, and more. The only caveat is that at approx US$200, it may not meet your definition of 'inexpensive'.

If that is more than you are willing to spend, then with a soldering iron and some time, you can use the JP1 interface to get some of the same functionality. Check out Rob's site for more information.

Disclaimer: I work for Easy Zapper Inc, the makers of the Harmony.

Glen Harris.

Question to the newsgroup: Is this an acceptable posting? I don't want to spam this newsgroup, but it seems like the Harmony is a natural answer to this question.
PS: We had *nothing* to do with the original post, and would never 'seed' a newsgroup with fake questions.

Thanks for the post... I checked out the website. Very cool. Looks exactly like I'm looking for. But of course, I have many more questions. I will ask the Harmony folks directly.

Thanks again

Glen: You get brownie points for asking :-)
All of us regulars are here to share information and have a bit of fun. If your information is helpful, I don't think any one will complain. We only complain when there is overt "seeding", helping is allowed.

BTW I have said it before and I will say it again. I don't know how you get Daniel to review your remote, but I sure think it is worth the trouble. If you did not get a chance to read one of his reviews I recommend you do. They are always thorough, well written and honest. That is why I trust them so much.

Just got mine... I have reciever, tv, dvd, computer, cablebox. I have 3 diffrent TV viewing patterns ( analog, digital, HDTV ) and have gotten this thing up and running 90% in an hour or so. Takes a few times to get each device down, but so far it's been great.

Now for the real test.... people that don't know how to use it!
