I put in a new home theater sysem with JVC components except for a Sony TV. My receiver is above the TV and the other components are behind a door. The JVC compulink system is supposed to allow me to run the components from the receiver ( I'm still working with JVC to fix that). I'm also interested in getting a universal remote such as the pronto. My qustion is: is there a box ( IR repeater I suppose) that can hook up to my components so I can operate them from behind a closed door?

Thanks for the help!!

The Pronto is strictly IR, you could get an IR repeater and put the receiver outside and the emitter behind the door.

You can also look at the ProntoPro (a lot more $) it does RF all you will need is to get the RF receiver, that will be placed behind the door.

I think some of the Pronto's brothers (Marantz RC5200 and CHAD) can do RF as well, read about them in the What's new. I don't know if they are out yet and what their price is

I have set up my home theater in such a way that most of my components are facing at right angle to my main seating position. I have set up an RF remote control transmitter (from Radio Shack) on top of my rear projection TV and the IR extender (receiver) across the room from my components. Fortunately, my equipment cabinet has a glass door which is the IR signal friendly. The RF transmitter can transmit through walls, floors and doors. However, the IR receiver must be far enough away from the components so the signal can get to their IR receptor.

I know the RF transmitter is fairly robust because I used it to control my components from a television from my upstairs bedroom. Good luck with the JVC link.

There are systems designed just to let your existing IR remote operate "hidden" components. They let you put a tiny "input sensor" outside (for example, attached to your TV next to its sensor) that goes through a relay and triggers remote "flashers" behind the door where your components can see the signals. Look on the Crutchfield Website for "IR extenders" (I think that's where they are, but Crutchfield redisigned their site recently).

Check out www.nilesaudio.com

I have the:
IRP6+ IR Repeater (Cat # FG00636)
MS-1 MicroSensor (Cat # FGO518)
IRC-1 IR Flasher (Cat # FG00094)

These work great except that my Philips DirecTIVO is a bit sensitive.

There are also devices that change IR to RF and then back to IR for these situations. In fact, I recently bought the Recoton device for my new Dishnet PVR so I could control it from upstairs, but the Dishnet PVR remote transmits both IR and RF. I now have the extender on e-bay. Check it out: item# 1303004574 . It will poably sell for about $40 with shipping.

Radio Shack also has a direct (wired via coax) IR extender that sends the IR signal back along the coax. It's their brand of a Xantech product.
